PHD Smart Jacks 2PHD’s Smart Jacks are a delicious healthy snack which taste great and help macro-conscious consumers stick to their nutrition goals. Packed full of oats and containing 15g of protein per 60g bar—they’re an enjoyable snack which will satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.

I’m a tough customer when it comes to on-the-go protein snacks—I want them to taste as good as the regular, high sugar/fat/taste version and I’m delighted to say that the Smart Jack doesn’t disappoint. The recent addition to PHD’s Smart Range of products, created to give consumers an intelligent choice of easy-to-consume sports nutrition, is a perfect eat-anywhere snack.

Available in five flavours: Apple Crumble, Blueberry Muffin, Chocolate Peanut, Topped Chocolate Hazelnut and Triple Chocolate—these high protein, oven-baked snacks taste every bit as good as a regular flapjack, with an incredible texture too. I tried the Apple Crumble, Triple Chocolate, Blueberry Muffin and Chocolate Peanut flavours—of which each was an enjoyable eating experience in its own right.

PHD Smart Jacks 3When I peeled back the wrapper I came face to face with quite a small looking bar, certainly much smaller in size than the PHD Smart Bar which is only 5g heavier in weight. But it looked tasty—I tried to turn the bar around, take in how it looks for the review, but it looked so good I couldn’t resist taking a bite. Regular flapjacks come in all shapes, sizes and textures—protein flapjacks are no different, with the texture of the cake varying wildly between the SCI-MX Pro 2 Go baked version and Warrior’s Raw Protein unbaked triumph of a bar. The PHD Smart Jack achieves the enviable feat of being both moist, and crunchy. The texture of the main cake (a flapjack is a cake right, not a biscuit?) was soft and moist, as though freshly baked—but the topping was crunchy, and the two extremes blended together in perfect synergy. It was sweet, but not overly so. All in all, a commendable achievement by PHD who, along with the Smart Bar are creating the most sublime on-the-go protein snacks I’ve ever eaten.

The first bar I tried was Apple Crumble and it tasted exactly like an apple crumble, which may sound crazy but sometimes you have to glance at the packet to see what the flavours actually are—not so with this bar. Chocolate Peanut and Blueberry Muffin were equally satisfying, both enjoyed with a coffee which brought out their flavours even more. As an ardent chocoholic, I left the Triple Chocolate flapjack until last, allowing me the opportunity to be fully objective.

White chocolate laced over a very chocolatey oat mixture invited me to get stuck in and start chomping away immediately. What a delicious snack, again the balance of taste and texture was perfectly struck—a rich, oaty mixture that was ever-so-slightly chewy with an intense hit of chocolate that avoided being sickly in any way. However, whilst I was expecting to enjoy the Triple Chocolate Smart Jack more than the other flavours in the range, I have to confess to liking them all pretty much equally. If I had to choose a favourite it would be between Blueberry Muffin and Apple Crumble—simply because I wasn’t expecting them to taste that good.

PHD Smart Jacks 1Nutritionally these bars are pretty good too, whilst they contain considerably more sugar (8g) than the Smart Bar (0.4g), at 229 kcal they are still a healthy snack. What’s remarkable is how full I felt after eating it, it seemed quite small almost ‘treat size’ but considering they are around 20% oats, one of these bars is enough to have as a mid-morning snack that will keep you going until lunch, no matter how late you take it. 15g of protein isn’t to be sniffed at either, sure there are other protein flapjacks on the market that contain more, such as Warrior’s Raw Protein Flapjack or Grenade’s Reload Protein Flapjack, but I feel there’s a trade off in the flavour and whole eating experience.

If you’re after a tasty and nutritious on-the-go protein snack that fits in with your sports nutrition goals, you won’t make a mistake with PHD Smart Jacks, no matter which flavour you choose. As with most of the protein products I’ve reviewed, Smart Jacks are ideal for so many uses—whether it’s for post-workout recovery or just as a treat throughout the day.
